Blepharoplasty - Eyelid Surgery
Eyelid / Blepharoplasty Surgery
Expressive eyes are an important aspect of facial beauty. Frequently it is also where the earliest signs of an aging face occur. Our aim with eyelid surgery is to recapture more youthful eyes that help rejuvenate your entire face, restoring their natural beauty by removing excess skin and fat. In some cases, adding fullness to hollow lower lids will mask dark circles caused, not by skin pigmentation, but by shadows.
The Upper Lid Blepharoplasty
This eyelid surgery primarily addresses the hooding of the upper eyelid that causes some people to always look tired or weary. The upper lid blepharoplasty is one of the most routine of all of the cosmetic facial procedures. In most cases the only anesthetic needed is a local or light IV sedation. Patients typically report little post-operative discomfort, and many are back to themselves in less than a week since this procedure produces a minimal amount of bruising and swelling.
During the procedure, which can be performed in our office operating suite, upper lid sagging skin is removed through a concealed incision made in the fold of the eyelid. Immediately afterwards patients return home. This surgery does not require wearing any post-surgical dressings or other encumbrances. Once healed the incisions are difficult if not impossible to see.
Lower Lid Blepharoplasty
Bulging fat and hollows create the illusion of under eye circles which can be addressed through a lower lid blepharoplasty. The surgery, which has a brief post-operative recovery period, involves removing prominent bulges by making a small incision behind the lower lash. When redundant skin is present, it can be removed and if a hollow exists beneath the bulging fat, it can be filled. A lower lid blepharoplasty or eye surgery is accomplished while the patient is under sedation.
In some people the major problem in this area of the face is related to the hollow beneath the eye. In the appropriate patient improvement may occur with a new procedure called the non-surgical blepharoplasty. In these cases we can fill in the hollow, hiding any bulges or depressions, giving a very natural contour to the lower eyelid so it transitions nicely into the cheek.
Dr. Wise performs two types of lower-lid eyelid surgery. If only fat pockets require removal, Dr. Wise performs a transconjunctival approach where no incisions are made on the outer eyelid or face. If protuberant fat pockets exist, along with creping of the fat, Dr. Wise will perform a subcilliary blepharoplasty, where a virtually undetectable incision is made directly under the lower lash line. Dr. Wise tailors his approach based upon patient need.
