Defining Desired Contours for Patients of all Ages

When a teenager has an overly large, crooked, or disproportionate nose, they may become very self-conscious about the way they look. Unfortunately, teens can be quite cruel to one another, and an abnormally shaped nose can make it harder to find social acceptance.

Although teenage plastic surgery can be a polarizing topic, rhinoplasty is the most common cosmetic surgery performed on teenagers. If you’re a teenager or the parent of a teenager who would like to resize or reshape their nose, teenage rhinoplasty could be an ideal solution.

What is Teenage Rhinoplasty?

Teenage rhinoplasty is a surgical cosmetic procedure used to adjust the size, shape, and proportions of the nose. Teenage rhinoplasty is very similar to traditional rhinoplasty, with the primary difference being the increased level of precision that’s needed. Because teenagers are often still developing their nasal cartilage, the doctor needs to confirm that the nose is fully developed before performing the surgery.

The Procedure: What to Expect

Before you or your teenage child undergoes teenage rhinoplasty, the first step will be a consultation with Dr. Wise. During this consultation, Dr. Wise will discuss the procedure and its implications with both the patient and their parent(s) or guardian(s).

For teenage rhinoplasty, it’s very important that every party involved is emotionally and mentally prepared for the experience and fully understands what they’re signing up for. During the consultation, Dr. Wise will utilize the Canfield Vectra 3D System to create a three-dimensional image of the patient’s face. This allows the patient to see the potential results firsthand and decide exactly what they want their new nose to look like.

Teenage rhinoplasty is typically performed as an outpatient procedure and takes between one and three hours. Depending on the extent of the procedure, either local or general anesthesia will be administered. Dr. Wise will then make the necessary incisions in the nasal area and begin shaping the cartilage and the nose’s underlying structures. Once the nasal size and shape have been corrected, the doctor will close the incisions and bandage the area.

Recovery from Teenage Rhinoplasty

After performing the procedure, Dr. Wise will provide the patient with detailed instructions for the healing process. Ideally, a parent or loved one will help care for the teenager for the first few days after the surgery. There will likely be bruising and discomfort, which will gradually subside over two or three weeks. It will be around a week before the patient can resume their normal routine, and strenuous exercise should be avoided for four to six weeks.
