Maintaining a consistent skincare routine is imperative if you want to keep your facial skin soft, smooth, and vibrant. This is especially important as you get older and start to develop wrinkles, folds, and skin discoloration. If you’re looking for a simple way to revitalize your facial skin, eliminate blemishes, and reduce signs of aging, a chemical peel could be the perfect solution.

What Is a Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel is a cosmetic treatment used to create smoother, healthier facial skin. The treatment reduces signs of aging skin and a variety of blemishes, including wrinkles, fine lines, acne, sun spots, dull complexion, and scarring.

How Do Chemical Peels Work?

Chemical peel treatment involves a special chemical solution being applied to the facial skin. This solution sloughs off the surface layer of skin, removing dead skin cells and leaving behind a softer, smoother complexion. At our facility, we offer two different types of chemical peels:

VI Peel - One of the chemical peels we offer is a VI Peel, which is a medium-depth peel that works on all skin types and tones and can treat a variety of cosmetic issues. The VI Peel removes the damaged surface layers of the facial skin using a blend of trichloroacetic acid, salicylic acid, vitamin C, phenol, and retinoic acid. This formula promotes cellular turnover and helps to reduce wrinkles, acne scars, age spots, hyperpigmentation, enlarged pores, and other skin issues.

Enlighten Peel - We also offer the Enlighten Peel, which is a treatment that takes place over the course of 28 days. This peel specifically targets issues like hyperpigmentation, sun damage, melasma, and other forms of skin discoloration. The Enlighten Peel works by halting melanin production and exfoliating the top layer of facial skin. As a result, the discolored pigmentation is brought to the surface, which encourages cell turnover. This provides both short and long-term skin tone improvement.

Benefits of Chemical Peels

Adding chemical peels to your normal skincare routine can provide you with a wide variety of benefits:

  • Smoother, firmer facial skin
  • Reduced wrinkles, lines, discoloration, and other signs of aging skin
  • Reduced acne, scarring, hyperpigmentation, enlarged pores, and other blemishes
  • Increased self-confidence
  • Healthier, more youthful-looking complexion
  • Non-invasive treatment
  • More even skin tone

What Should I Expect During the Treatment?

The specifics of your chemical peel treatment will depend on which peel you select. You can start by sitting down for a quick consultation with one of our cosmetic experts. They will discuss your available treatment options with you and evaluate your aesthetic goals.

If you decide to try the VI Peel, the peel will be applied to your face at our facility, and you’ll be able to head home shortly after. However, you will need to keep the peel on your skin for at least four hours. After you’ve washed it off, you’ll need to follow specific aftercare instructions to ensure optimal results.

The process is a bit different for the Enlighten Peel. First, the peel will be applied to your facial skin at our facility in a process that will take around 20 to 30 minutes. You’ll be able to head home after that, but you must keep the peel on your face for 8 to 12 hours. Then, over the next 28 days, you will regularly apply products to your facial skin that have been provided by Dr. Wise. There will be specific instructions for how to properly use these products and achieve the best possible results.

How Long Is the Recovery Time?

Generally, there is no recovery downtime necessary after undergoing chemical peel treatment. There may be some redness and swelling for a couple of days, which prompts some patients to take time off work due to their appearance. However, you should be able to resume your normal routine as quickly as you’d like.

Am I a Candidate for a Chemical Peel?

If you’d like to rejuvenate your facial skin and reduce blemishes, you could be a good candidate for a chemical peel. Ideal candidates for these treatments should meet the following requirements:

  • Have a desire to reduce signs of aging skin such as fine lines and wrinkles
  • Have a desire to treat facial blemishes like acne, scarring, discoloration, and enlarged pores
  • Have realistic expectations
  • Not be currently pregnant or nursing
  • Be in generally good physical health

Are There Any Side Effects?

Chemical peels can cause the following side effects in some patients:

  • Swelling
  • Blistering
  • Itchiness
  • Allergic reaction
  • Infection
  • Pain
  • Crusting
  • Dry skin
  • Skin discoloration

How Long Will It Take To See Results After a Chemical Peel?

Typically, the improvements in your facial skin will appear gradually after a chemical peel. It usually takes around four to six weeks for the full effects of the treatment to take hold.
